It’s not a guide, it’s not an itinerary, it’s not a list of tips or a points to put on your “When in Mallorca” diary. It’s our precious Mallorcan memories that we want to share with you.

Our trip to Mallorca was one of the most spontaneous we’ve ever done – in fact, the idea was born three days before the departure. And yet it was as relaxed as it could ever be. Do you remember that childish feeling of being carefree? When someone else is taking care of all possible troubles so that you are not even aware of any of them? We were those kids on Mallorca from the beginning till the end of our stay.

Like in any journey, there were moments, which made this trip special, and those moments will first come to our mind when someone asks about our impressions of Mallorca. That’s why before writing all the useful info we could get and sharing the conclusions we came to, I want first to show the most vivid memories that will, hopefully, stay with us for the long years coming.

Watching the shadow of the palm tree moving

In Palma de Mallorca, the capital of the island, we stood for a little eternity looking at the perfect angle of the palm tree at the Cathedral of Mallorca and its shadow.

Chasing cats (with a camera, naturally!) on the promenade in Palma…

A surprising amount of cats were chilling on their alternative beach, and they didn’t want to be taken on pictures though. However, as soon as we stepped into the sea, we forgot all about this unfortunate circumstance.

…then being chased by bats

When the twilight comes down, look up and you will see that it’s not the birds who flip with their wings above your head, but bats. Fearless bats who are here at home. Their clumsy moves of wings against the darkening sky, silhouettes of the palm trees and glowing light of the street lamps are the moments we want to remember.

Being hypnotized in front of the touristy shops just like when we were kids

Neither of two us, once we grew up, had a chance or a particular desire to be back to the classic beach holidays preferring more adventurous style of travelling to slightly colder destinations. That’s why it was an amazing flush of memories being back to the souvenir shops with hats, sunglasses, sunscreens, silly towels etc., in a beautiful white Sant Elm.

Smiling at the honey-colored light while hugging your Vespa driver

Choosing a Vespa Scooter as a mean of transport allowed us being literally glued to each other, but we wouldn’t want ask for more. Constantly outdoors, enjoying the sun, enjoying the wind, enjoying the road, feeling the warmth of your partner – it couldn’t get better.

All these spontaneous stops because of “oh-my-god, did you see THAT?”

Mallorca is not a hidden and unknown destination, there are hardly any tracks that haven’t yet been beaten, and just like many we were following pretty much the same itinerary, but every time we spotted some beauty on our own, no matter if it’s just a beautiful shade or a lonely house on the cliff, the joy was tremendous, because we felt like discoverers.

The Great Flood of Orange Juice

Oranges in Mallorca are not only fruit… It’s omnipresent and is everything but exotic. Therefore, freshly pressed orange juice is the thing to have for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and I swear, it was perfectly fine with me! Just like wine connoisseurs in France, Mallorcan are talking about orange juice with so much technical knowledge, that you couldn’t help developing an admiring attitude to this sacred culture!

Discovering that even touristy places can still be tourist-free

When we arrived to Valldemossa, one of the most visited spots in Mallorca, we found the streets overcrowded with tourists. However, the moment we turned on the next street after the main one, the town appeared to be empty. That’s again one thing which makes the difference between a tourist and a wanderer – how far is one ready to go from the “main attraction”?

Olive Trees, which look like people

Do you remember that Fangorn Forest in “The Lord of the Rings”? The trees which had faces, soul and character? The same respect and admiration I experienced when we crossed the fields of the olive trees, every one of which looked human. A human much wiser and more patient than I am.

Riding down the craziest road of our lives (so far)…

Scary and hypnotizing, down and down till you realize WHAT you have just passed through! Fortunately, it was still off-season, and we had this place all to ourselves without dozens of coaches with tourists who come to Sa Calobra every day on summertime.

…and falling there down out of fatigue and crazy wind

Walking through the wall of wind in the Torrent de Pareis was an intensely beautiful and tiresome moment. It gave this feeling when you simply can’t hold your eyes open and you let yourself slide down and have a nap calmed by the sound of the waves.

Entering a true Spanish Manor

Attracted by pictures with splendid gardens, we thought – why not after all? Thus we visited Jardines de Alfabia. Again, due to off-season, it was empty. A gorgeous manor with historic artefacts that made us feel so very much in Spain! And just for once putting traditional guitar music didn’t feel embarrassing but absolutely in a right place.

Turning around in a right moment

Climbing the Calvari Steps in Pollença was okay, but at the end, when we finally turned around to see what we deserved to see, our jaw dropped.

Having the beach all to ourselves!

An absolute advantage of living in a country with a climate which is considered as bad, is our developing cold resistance. Thus, when majority of people find the temperature too low, we find it perfect. Which means that at the end, the overcrowded and expensive summer beaches, were completely empty in the end of April. Fantastic. Romantic. Beautiful. Our own.

Trees that resisted in spite of anything

After a walk in Cala Ratjada (where you feel just like in Germany due to the massive amount of German tourists), we went up to see the lighthouse on Punta de Capdepera. But it was not the lighthouse we are going to remember, but the trees. It’s a metaphor for so many life lessons – in a place, which is not made to be lived in, the trees still manage to exist. Even if it means spending their whole life without a possibility to get up from the ground.

White Lines of Cala d’Or

Cala d’Or is not just another resort town of Mallorca, and God knows how many of them exist on the Eastern part of the island. Built in the thirties, Cala d’Or has its style. Minimalistic, white, an incredibly aesthetic style. When you expect nothing, you get everything. We simply loved that two hours walk in Cala d’Or.

Tapas. Sangria. Tapas. Sangria

A week of a tapas-sangria and orange juice diet. Not a day like in San Sebastian, but a week. Mercado Gastronomico San Juan is the place to fall in a tapas coma.

I do hope you could feel those Mallorca moments as vividly as we remember them.
