There is a place in Estonia that is simply breathtaking. And completely unusual for Estonian landscape. It’s called Soomaa national park which means “land of bogs”. Its peculiarity stands in its name, as the territory of the park includes lots of unique bogs that look striking. But it’s not all. Meadows, forests, wildlife and curious fauna – well, we felt obliged to spend there a weekend.
Where to stay?
On the territory of the park is a Guesthouse Põnka welcoming guests of Soomaa. Picturesque place, friendly welcome, fair prices and very authentic atmosphere of a real Estonian remote farm.
What to do?
Canoeing. The territory of the park is famous for its annual floods that cover forest and roads and reach quite a surprising level. But even out of the flooding season, having a small canoe ride can be spectacular. Wrapped by the noises of nature and only nature, enjoying the peace and follow the traces of animals – what a joy! By the way, if you happen to be there during the river flood, your canoeing might look like this.
Beaver’s job!
Visiting the bogs. Don’t hesitate to make the tour with a guide who’ll tell you more than you’d like to know about the nature of the bogs, history of the park and who’ll show you the traces of… little bears and plants that actually eat insects! You agree, that the view is fantastic, don’t you? With an arrangement you can also have a typical meal for lunch including traditional Estonian porridge and homemade bread and fruit dessert. Delicious and healthy!

Make sure that Soomaa is on your list of things to experience in the Baltics, as it is definitely worth it.
Hi! Do you know Estonian? I’m exploring places to stay in Soomaa but the website of the Guesthouse Põnka is only in Estonian. Do you know if they speak English?
Hi! No, we don’t speak Estonian, but in such cases we write directly to the host via the email or we find the place on Booking. Normally, there is always someone who can answer in English. :)
