November 2016

Is the grass greener on the other side? Is the see bluer? Is the West better than East? We went to Blackpool to find out the answer.

When our trip to Blackpool took place, we were still living in Saltburn-by-the-Sea, a tiny resort town on the East coast of England. No doubt, there is no competition between such a hidden gem as Saltburn and worldwide famous resort as Blackpool, but we were very curious to look what such a famous English sea resort looks like. Besides, we had another purpose for visiting Blackpool that I’ll tell a bit further, but first let’s focus on Blackpool curiosities and what makes it so famous.

The Lights

Hard to believe, but the first city in the world where the electricity was used to the municipal illumination was Blackpool itself. That is one of the reasons why there is so much entertainment connected with lights in the town, and you can’t help noticing it the moment you enter the town. Blackpool Illuminations are an annual light festival stretching along the promenade, covering nearly six miles with dazzling lights, illuminated displays, and themed installations. By the way, it is also one of the rare towns that kept its original tram-line on its place without turning it into an enormous avenue.

Blackpool tower

I would restrain myself from comparing Blackpool Tower with the Eiffel Tower in Paris, but at the same time it was indeed inspire by the latter! Blackpool Tower does attract the attention, so it’s only natural that it became a symbol of the town. But this tower is much more than just an overview point. In the same complex are located circus and ballroom, which during the past years has been hosting the most famous ballroom dance championship in the world and other dancing events. Actually this is the reason why we went to Blackpool at the first place. A huge Kizomba Festival! Yes, it’s not only blogging and cycling that occupies our minds, there is a big chunk of dance too :)

Pleasure Beach

For those who love adrenaline, Blackpool has a huge amusement park, with one of the biggest roller coasters (called “Big One”) in the world. We didn’t dare, but funnily enough Pleasure Beach’s reputation had reached me even before we set foot to England.

Favorite UK’s Sea Resort

In the 19th and 20th centuries, Blackpool became a favorite holiday spot for working-class families from Northern England’s industrial cities, especially during the summer months. With the rise of the railway, affordable travel allowed people to visit for weekend getaways, making Blackpool a resort for family-friendly holidays. Not always did the Brits spend their days off in Spain, and before the globalization, people tended to stay in the country.

Neither of us, however, was inspired by what we saw and I would never guess that Blackpool was the town which enjoyed such a fame. In total dissonance to the culture part, Blackpool looks like a very tasteless resort. Cheap entertainments, shops selling trash, overcrowded streets, queuing in H&M and Primark. Creepy b&bs, tasteless shows advertisements and “Hot towel barbershop” on every other crossroad. To be honest, I was disappointed.

Seaside…

Luckily, the sea is gorgeous everywhere. East coast, west coast… Doesn’t really matter.

Lytham Saint Annes

Don’t hesitate to see the villages around , for example, Lytham Saint Annes. Unlike Blackpool, it has some of the aristocratic vibe of a bourgeois resort. In a word – very different from Blackpool, bit the contrasts always make things more interesting!

Despite some bitter-sweet feelings, despite a bit of disappointment, it was a lovely weekend and we are very happy to have visited Blackpool. Especially knowing that the following year we would have a great opportunity to visit some other famous British resort with a totally different mood – Brighton, Rye, Bournemouth, Cromer… Blackpool stands out from the lot for sure.
